Mine are pretty positive. Had some problems with some parts but it wasn't deal-breaking for me as it was for some other people.
To me the show suffered from 2 main problems:
- A very divided fanbase
- A transition between 2 animation studios (MiR and Pierrot)
The storyline itself was solid. It was at its core a Good Vs Evil storyline with some grey areas like the underscored question of Segregation Vs. Tolerance regarding the Spirits.
The vocal parts of the fanbase feels like the Dark Avatar concept was poorly conceived and that the finale was layered in "Deus Ex" but that phrase gets thrown around so much, especially in the Avatar fandom which has become rather...divided. Its essentially G1 vs everything after all over again so I expected it.
The animation for the finale was top-notch, the fight sequences were excellent, the music was inspiring and the stakes had never been higher. But for every good the show delivered "fans" or viewers chose to see what they perceived as bad. Yes, the giant Kaiju-esque battle seemed a little out there, yes Jinora showing up with the solution seemed kind of like a cop-out but Jinora's role was being built up since episode 2.
I also feel the camps are being further divided with the setting. Some people want to see the series return to Republic City. Others feel it should continue this worldwide scope of adventure. Then there are the writing snobs who feel the writers/creators don't know what they are doing...ruining the franchise...etc...etc.
I liked this season. I preferred the edgier more grounded 1st season more but the creators were trying to please as many fans as possible with this:
- More of the Avatar World. Check.
-Spirit World shennanigans. Check.
-A definitive origin to the Avatar legacy. Check.
-More beautiful fight scenes. Check.
-****ing Verrick. Check!
But the more "discerning fans" choose to focus on:
- "Deus ex machina" moments
- ATLA fanwank.
- "Hating" on that "cheesy love triangle". I think its safe to say they care more about that than they let on.
It's sad really that a show with so much love and effort put into it, get so over-analyzed and dished on because the show didn't go the way some fans wanted.
You don't happen to have been on tumblr, have you?
