From what I saw :
Before 2000: JetMan, Sun Vulcan, Liveman, Bioman, Zyuranger, Dairanger, Maskman, and some Battle Fever J and Gorenger here and there (next will be Kakuranger, it's almost fully subbed).
I would say
Sun Vulcan
is the black sheep, because of its very *repetitive* nature even by SS tropes. It gots some charm through its vintage aspect, but if I were to dress a list of the episodes critical to the plot, I think I couldn't find more than 8 or 9 of them : the first one, the mid-season retooling one, and the 6 last ones, from the arrival of Inazuma Ginga.
In an older post I made :
Quote:
Well it's fun to watch, I can't deny. Crazy stuff there, like the camera monster whose attack is to zoom in and out, or the two-parter about Espers.
But I think it's a shame that you can compile all the main plot in 10 episodes, and the rest is stock plots (and by 10 I'm generous). I know the genra was still new at the time, and I guess what I call "stock" was perhaps used for the very first time (the parental episode, the wedding one, the vampire one(*), etc.) There's only 3 heroes (well 5, the funky boss and his daughter count as much) and they don't really get the attention they deserve. For example, here and there is a red-focused or yellow-focused episode, but the rest is generic in terms of plot or narration.
Sometimes I got the impression they were testing stuff that became staple in the following years. For example, a shot of the Sun Vulcan robot turning his back to a defeated exploding giant motw was used only once.
(*) fun to notice there was always a Dracula-esque vampire episode in older Sentai.
Special bonus:
Zyuranger
, fun to watch still incredibly dumb breaking suspension of disbelief every 2 minutes.
Post 2000: Gokaiger, Gaoranger, Gekiranger, Gobusters, Magiranger Shinkenger, Dekaranger and Boukenger (haven't start Kyoruger yet mostly because of Zyuranger dinobullsh*t overdose, afraid of starting Gosei because of the general bashing).
Gobusters
, again from an older post:
Quote:
They tried new things at first, and they had to, because it was quite a job to take over after the cool cross-over fiesta that was Gokaiger.
Storywise, the plot was solid until Jin and J appeared, with a "realistic" side, and in the last part with the cards. Between this two parts, it was meh, Enter/Escape appeared for no reason than fight the Gobusters.
I like how they answered "why don't the baddies send all their mechs at once ?": because Messiah is a dumbass.
Enter was a great vilain, he managed to be competent and, step by step, put his plan in motion. And I mean a REAL plan, not like a stupid device to hypnotize all children in Tokyo and force them to die eating too much ramen. The vilain DID something, for once that was refreshing. Messiah was transparent. I think the show lacked another couple of evil generals (yes I waited for Control and Alt).
Cross-over with Gavan type-G was fun (I'm a fan of Gavan and the space sheriffs trilogy).
Mech fights were good, as the Gobusters fights. I didn't really like the cast, except J and he's a guy in a robot suit...
