This is a monster movie. Not a suspense thriller.
Godzilla. NOT Cloverfield. NOT Super 8. Those movies were terrible.
I can understand not liking Cloverfield, that movie had a lot of problem...especially the ending.
But I can't agree with you on Super 8. It was an absolutely delightful return to the classic Steven Spielberg children's adventure film. Maybe I'm just biased on that having grown up watching ET and such, but, I loved every second of it.

CGI is just another tool that takes the same amount of effort and skill as any other visual of a movie, if not more. It takes animators animating by hand and direction to make any effects.
This bizzare mindset on CGI perplexes me. Nobody appreciates the craft of all aspects of movie visuals anymore.
I just think it's overused these days (ex. Blood Effects)...and I profoundly miss practical special effects, which as an artist, I can appreciate a bit more as a craft.
While I understand CGI does require a lot of work, I will always have a stronger appreciation for someone who took the time to build an animatronic, cast a mask, or use miniatures. It looks more real to me.
