I think it also comes down to different people wanting different thing out of shows. For instance, I'm a very character based viewer. If a show has characters I like and enjoy watching, I am massivley forgiving of plot holes and SFX failures. If I'm enjoying myself watching a charcter's adventures, I usually won't even notice most plot holes until they're pointed out to me. Other people might prefer plot, and any plot holes or continuity gaffes will take them right out of a show.

Therefore, one person can look at a show and declare it a masterpiece because it hits all their personal preference just right, while another will see an awful show whose good points aren't anything they really care about.
