That's what I thought as well, to translate via a third language is not a good thing to do. Subs (or especially dubs, if you take something like old french Sentai or german Winspector) are mostly already a bit altered from the original. This is basically happening automatically because languages often have a cultural background as well and by using protugues subs, you would have the result of what the Portuguese version might be like, but don't really get everthing from the Japanese version (it's like copying an already imperfect copy multiple times, it will only get worse).
Japanese has many unique speaking patterns that should be translated directly from Japanese to really understand what is being said there.
It might be helpful if your Japanese isn't that good to get some help from another subs so you will make sure you got the gist of it right (which is why I decided to help out by saying that there's no German subs or dubs available), but the original audio language should be your focus to base the subs on.
