What happened to Shinji wasn't the result of him being an idiot hero, and Kouta's not of below-par intelligence because he hesitates in killing someone whom he considered his best friend. It takes a little more than 3 episodes (and likely only a day or two) for someone to jump from being someone's best friend to outright deciding to murder them.
