"He is a teenager" isn't really an excuse, not that you're excusing.

It sucks because his fixation on Mai is kind of the driving point, so with her so useless (oh boy I sure do love female characters that exist merely as props for the male characters) he seems utterly unsympathetic in every way.

It's like she's straight out of one of the early Romero Dead movies.
