Amiibo support was technically added a few days ago in an update. I should note that making use of Amiibo support for the 3DS and 3DSXL is done through an add-on, as the hardware in not capable of detecting Amiibos' NFC. The NFC adapter is set for a release in 2015.

The New 3DS already has this built in and will work right off the bat. However the N3DS hasn't launched outside of Japan and Australia.
