Its pretty much the same as when you say "Moviey from the 80s". In Japan when you use the Period terms to refer to the time people instantly know which timeframe those movies/shows are from.

And in terms of Rider it pretty much replaces the words Old and New. When thes use Showa Rider in the movie the audience especially Kids instantly know that those heroes are old. And not just six years ago old but more in the sense of "before you were even born" old.

I understand that they are eras in reference to emperors and the shows that aired during their rule, which is why I think it is stupid to consider something that aired five years after the Showa period ended, is stupid to call it Showa when they are talking about a certain producer and not the emperor they are referencing. If they are going to use that designation, then they should not call them Heisei and Showa riders, but instead call them something else. It's not that hard
