Lighting is probably the easiest thing to fix. Oh try to avoid firing a flash directly on the subject, its going to blow out the details and give it really harsh lighting. If you do fire the flash directly, try to place a piece of wax paper over the flash to diffuse it as much as possible. But seriously, lighting is crucial.
