Personally, I wish they'd just do away with the whole crippling thing. It was a product of its time and it shows. But since that's probably not going to happen, I think Barbara at least deserves one last fight where the Joker only gets in a cheap shot.

Didn't she think it was a friend of hers at the door? Her guard was down, it happens to the best of people (even that jackass Batman).

I like the crippling thing. Not the act how it happened but what it did for Babs as a character. Not being able to use her legs forced her to develop her mind and other skills and became a new kind of hero that wasnt just highly valuable for Batman but the superhero community as a whole.

The way these panels are structured indicate that the Joker didn't immediately shoot Barbara once she opened the door. He stood there, holding the gun, which Barbara noticed almost immediately, hence the inclusion of the second panel right before the third. In the amount of time it took for the Joker to shoot Barbara, it is easy enough to presume that Barbara had time to react. A change like that in the film would be reasonable and much more in character for Barbara Gordon than the original comic.

Barbara Gordon is the daughter of the police commissioner in one of the most crime-ridden cities in the world. She probably would use the peephole.

Also, to say she's have reacted the way you think is also taking how much Batgirl has changed over time. The Batgirl that got shot by the Joker was probably taking out minor league criminals at the most, not people like that Joker. Fan base or not that's pretty much how people saw her, and still many probably do now. Everyone bar Batman would probably have reacted in the same way. In a story that's entirely about how messed up the Joker is, that much is to be expected.

The story itself is incredibly demeaning in the way it portrays Barbara, but I really don't think this is an example of it.

The Joker shows up at your door. Not in the Batcave, not out on patrol, at your door. For a second, if you were Barbra, you might be worried that he'd somehow figured out who you are. At that range, there is still only so much even she could do, and even then she still got shot. I'd have preferred Barbra go out fighting as well before she was "retired", but in this scenario it never appeared to me that she really had moment to do anything.
