I don't know if it would affect them from a financial stand point (unless they remade the Prequels as the "canon" versions), but I think it would cause a bad fan reaction among the young, unrepresented Star Wars fans if like a 1/3rd of the franchise just up and disappeared like that.

I think it's more of a matter of interests aligning than trying to appeal to the fans, look at the marvel movies, every single one after Iron Man has been clamored to be "the one where Marvel finally fails" yet they keep going with their idea and succeed.
I have no clue if Disney has an interest in reworking the prequels, but they won't do it for petty fans.

Yeah, that would be my main issue, a lot of people grew up on the prequel era, and eventually they will be able to use that nostalgia.
