My thoughts on female Sentai heroes have evolved somewhat over the last year. I agree that the show presents well-rounded ladies more often than not. And I also think the argument that the girls are constantly in need of rescue falls apart because the mega-theme of sentai is the power of teamwork, and the boys are constantly being saved as well.

But...

Even when a show is chock-full of aspirational females, there's always gonna be the episode where one of the girls threatens to give up everything to marry a prince (at best) or some rando dude from childhood (at worst). There's always gonna be the episode where one of the girls is so frivolous she considers becoming a pop star at the expense of her duty. There's always gonna be a moment where the girls get disturbingly excited about shopping, dancing, and/or baking, despite none of those interests fitting their characters' established personalities. And that's just the start of the troubling tropes of the genre.

The constant flow of these "girls are supposed to like these things and act this way" messages are gross to me. And they're especially gross when the characters are otherwise presented as strong, independent women.

Also, maybe let's not judge colors off of crappy scans. The color could be skewed by any number of factors between printing and scanning of the image.

Remember that early leaked photo? That color blue was way closer to the "male" blue. These scans do veer toward the aqua end of the spectrum (albeit, a deep aqua). The truth is probably somewhere in between.
