It's purpose was to give fanservice (since Freeza is the fan favorite villain in Japan) and to show that no matter how much more powerful he may get, he will never beat Goku. BoG and RF are like comparing DB and DBZ. BoG had a much better plot, was more comedic, and introduced new mythology to the universe. RF was more action packed, light on plot, but it was still a fun and enjoyable ride and gave us great fanservice.

I think both are fantastic movies and they work perfectly well with each other. I think it is funny though how the people who complained that BoG lacked action then complained that RF had too much action.

I like the analogy to DB and DBZ with those movies. I did enjoy Battle of Gods better because of the comedy. I liked that RF basically showcased both Goku's and Vegeta's weaknesses. Also I feel that the whole point of the RF is hopefully leading to a threat that Goku and Vegeta are forced to work together to stop it.
