Ted was very popular in Japan. Kojima Haruna of AKB48 helped promote it and a fan club(yes, Ted had a fan club in Japan). Taka Tomy put out some toy vinyls. There were promotional gimmicks for Japanese Hotsprings with tie-ins to Ted. Kumamoto Prefecture's bear mascot 'met' Ted.

That's just promotional stuff before and after the movie hit. The move itself was the largest opening for any R rated comedy in Japan ever. It stayed at the no. 1 for a full month, made the equivalent of 44 million USD, and is still the highest grossing comedy ever in Japan.
