Yeah, this is an actual genre in mainland China, Taiwan, and nearby regions.

Tokusatsu in its proto state began as travelling puppet dramas featuring heroes and monsters. Performers would go from town to town and put on shows for people featuring various heroes. (the very first tokusatsu superhero came from these shows)

This was also a tradition in China and it's pretty cool to think of them as a branched evolution. Puppet shows in Japan lead to tokusatsu programs while those in China lead to actual puppet TV dramas.
