Some of the anime that I have finished recently.
Ajin: Demi-Human - As a big fan of the manga, I enjoy it. I find it to be a very interesting anime adaptation as this anime is fully CG than being normal 2D animation. 3D animation is not bad once you get used too. Some scenes it did look off at times, but the animation at times can look really good. It does capture the dark and gritty feel that the manga has going for it.
The voice work in both Japanese and English are very well done. Whoever voiced Sato in English did a really good job. The characters in the anime are very well done. Kei Nagai is a character that shown changed over time as he becomes stronger and more violent as the story goes on. Sato is probably the best villain in anime and manga recent history in my opinion. Such a dark and sinister villain that I really love his character.
The action is very well done too. I don't like how they tone down some of the violence from the manga as the manga did had more blood and gore in it. The anime does remove scenes from the manga and episode 13 plays much differently than it does in the 5th volume. One big plot hole that the anime has is
Tosaki can now see IBMs. How did this happen? It makes no sense?!
.
Also one thing I didn't like about in the last episode was
Kei frees Nakano just like that as if nothing happen and agrees to go with him after being imprisoned for so long. While in the manga I felt like it was done better
. I hate to sound like a purist, but I did enjoy the manga more. I like the art style better in the manga and I felt like the story was told much better in the manga. However I still say that the anime is pretty great. There was never a dull moment and each episode made you want to see more.
Overall, Ajin: Demi-Human is a solid anime that has action, mystery, drama and horror in a world filled with interesting characters. I do look forward to season 2 on how they will adapt the other volumes of the manga. The 3D animation will turn people off for sure, but I say give it a watch. If you don't like the 3D animation art style, I do suggest to read the manga instead. If you enjoy anime like Parasyte or 3x3 Eyes, you should enjoy Ajin: Demi-Human. Grade: B+
California Crisis: Gun Salvo - There's not much to say about this anime really. The story is your typical run from the Government as our main character has an object that they want and the main character does not want to give it to them. This anime set in the US, but was never released outside of Japan which I find very interesting. This anime is pretty much "1980's The Anime". The music, animation and general tone feels retro. The anime is very dated out, but it does help give its charm. This anime does show that it was made in the era that it was made in. Anyone who is very nostalgic of the 1980's decade should get a kick out of this anime.
I did enjoy the animation as everything had a shiny and outlined style to it. Making it feel like a western animated show or movie than something from Japan. The characters are forgettable and the ending is so anticlimactic. This anime has a special charm to it as it tries to be something different compare to other anime titles at the time. I only recommended this anime for people who nostalgic for the 1980's or watch it on a rainy day to pass off time. Grade: C
Demon Hunter Makaryuudo - I found this anime to be very interesting. This anime is pretty obscure as there is almost little to no information on the web. The anime was never released outside of Japan, but it's up on Youtube. Anime News Network and My Anime List barely have any information on this anime. Looks like it's not based on a manga, video game or any other sources. Making this anime a pretty original title for its time.
This anime was not too bad. It was entertaining to watch and had a cool story. The idea of a female demon hunter who is a powerful being from the underworld sent to the human realm to hunt demons is awesome. The story falls pretty flat every on and the story overall does not make much sense. All of the characters are not very good. I can't even remember the names of the main characters after the anime was over.
I did enjoy the action and the animation was pretty solid for the most part. This anime feels very incomplete and was mostly likely plan to be an ongoing series. Had this anime continued after 1989, we could have a really cool anime series. Unless you want to watch something obscure or totally bored with nothing to do, I don't recommended this anime. I will give this anime some credit for effort. Grade: C+
