I'm glad to hear it gets better, because I've put off watching the 2nd episode 3 times today just because the intro gave me a headache

And yeah, Geki's pilot isn't the best. It is better than most other pilots, though. But in relation to the rest of the show, it's not the best start. Jan's lack of understanding Japanese (As well as poor speaking skills) may get annoying, the Sha-Fu/Xiafu/however you spell it is kind of forceful and throws him on the team, and everything else is just average.
