Exactly this.

I watched the latest episode, waiting for a transformed fight that never came. I wasn't annoyed by that though. Like you say, every so often, Garo dials things back a little, and this was one of those. Alice does somewhat feel like a retread of Kaoru - an innocent human who stumbled into this world of Horrors and Makai Knights/Priests. She's not as endearing as Kaoru was, but not really a detriment to the show in any way.
