If the movie is well written, they don't need to pull this stunt to make a character relatable. Saying someone is a gay character does not instantly make them a good character.

Just look at Supergirl. Turning Alex into a lesbian was hands down the worst thing they could do for the show not only because it completely altered her character from the first season and that it started to take up half of the run time of an episode, but also the actress is completely uncomfortable whenever she has to talk about how much she loves Maggie.
