No.
My issue is that they already have the main series, the Kimberly spin-off, and the crossover with the Justice League going on.
And we just got a modern day reboot of MMPR in the movie.
So why are we getting another “Hey, want to see the early Power Rangers?” story if most people picking up the comic have just come off of seeing the movie, and the comic team is nothing like the guys they just saw?
I’m not saying cancel Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, I love what they’re doing. I’m not saying don’t give Kimberly a side story/gaiden, nor am I against the Justice League crossover.
I am just saying that “Hey, you guys have other fans! And you already gave the OG ground 3 whole comic series to choose from. How about giving some scraps to us other kids at the table, huh?”
My argument is that they’re already writing a story that is mostly unrecognizable, or off formula to what MMPR is, that most readers I’ve come across who go into something simply for nostalgia, especially Power Rangers’ fair weather fans, would be turned off by it.
The rangers haven’t had a solid win besides setting back that Black Dragon Zord.
Rita is so competent she takes out the Command Center seasons before happens in the show, and hijacks Alpha to use against the rangers.
Tommy gets a sneak peek at his new form though a dystopian universe ruled by his evil alternate self, which if nothing else spoils his new tiger form for him (in-universe spoilers, how horrible). And on a serious note, the Green Ranger has come off less badass in this, and more of a liability because of mentally compromised state at first, and just his lack of action due to power coin issues.
These are not bad things, nor do I dislike them…too much. I do enjoy the comic, and want to see where they’re taking this.
But that’s me, and I’ve seen and dealt with people who were all hyped up for the Power Rangers movie. They’re the same ones who go see the Spider-man movies, and the other superhero movies.
They don’t fucking care about the comics.
Not that it’s exactly the same, as Marvel stuff are comics first, live-action second, while the Rangers are the other way around.
But people like their formulas, and this comic says “fuck that” to them.
Why are new readers or movie fans going to stick around, when Tommy hasn’t morphed for the past few issues, and the Rangers have barely gotten in a win, rather keeping Rita at bay?
From the people I’ve met, and I’ve moved a lot so personality wise these are many, varied people, the way Tommy is being portrayed will have turned off quite a few readers. I know how people on this forum tend to feel about JDF and Tommy, but he is an icon of this series, and his draw/loss against Scorpina, him being played by Rita and Black Dragon, and now him being stranded on Drakkon’s world and not using his martial arts to take out at least a few Ranger Sentries, like how he would in the show, that would turn off quite a few people.
Me, I’m chill with it. But acting like the same people who are reading simply for nostalgia would be accepting of all these changes and stay around is a bit of reach.
Let’s compare it to other companies with “sharing the spotlight” problems.
The Force Awakens did well by taking half of A New Hope’s plot, and despite bitching about how lazy that was it did succeed.
This does the opposite. And while I enjoy it for its originality, I would like it if some of that was spread about. Because the nostalgia crowd has proven to be less forgiving to things that don’t suit them.
DC likes to overexpose Batman, but we still get a Superman, Wonder Woman, or Green Lantern adaptation every once in a while. Marvel learnt how to sell characters others thought of as C-list heroes and make it work. Fucking Michael Bay’s Transformers had the Dinobots, for better or worse.
And Hasbaro is working IDW as hard as they can to establish their own little comic verse, with mixed results but it’s still going regardless.
If they only sell MMPR, eventually their number of readers will dwindle to an unattractive small number, as people move one from the MMPR hype. Look at Pokemon Go, sure it still has people playing, but it took forever for them to get to the Johto Pokemon, and all the hype they had going for it died down partially because of their limited content.
So no, I’m not saying stop with the MMPR stories, I’m saying why is it only MMPR stories, I3ra5s Beetle. It’s a comic book company, they can make multiple series at the same time. Why are you acting like only one group in a fandom can have their nostalgia fulfilled while everyone else has to sit back and nod?
How does it rob MMPR fans of their nostalgia if Lightspeed Rescue and Turbo fans get a interquel comic as well?
When I said “jump to Zeo”, I meant like how the Pink Ranger comic is basically during Season 3, so just have a comic that’s set in the middle of Zeo, not “Oh fuck this Lord Drakkon story, let’s skip ahead and just say ‘they beat him.’”
