Oh man that scene made this show for me. Kuroto is a fucked person and having a complete change of heart would not have made sense. Having him be human for a few seconds as his self made mother surrogate dies to save the day made my eyes well up. I also like the idea of his mother dying is what partially fueled his desire to create these games and cultivate the bugsters and Poppy dying motivated him to defeat Cronus.
