Funny you should mention that, because that's exactly what TRU tried to do back in the early 2000s with a small batch of stores branded "Geoffrey's". It was an attempt to make Toys R Us stores more than just aisles of boxes on shelves. There was a snack bar, a party room, an activity center, a babershop, kid's clothing, a playplace, live demos of the latest toys, and events planned pretty much every week, ranging from arts and crafts to Yu-Gi-Oh leagues. And it did pretty well... for about a year or two. Then many of the events stopped, the toy demos were taken down, they play place was closed off and removed, and eventually, the place was converted into a regular TRU.

Sadly you won't be able to find much on them outside of a 15 years-old NPR article. I only know about them because I had one in my town. Point is, they tried what you're suggesting, and it didn't work out like they'd hoped.
