Well, blackface is not inherently bad. It's bad because of the culture context and history of it, a context and history which Japan does not have. Just like we don't get why drawing human figures with four fingers is bad. In Japans, it's a similar thing. It was a way to show prejudice against certain lower class people who were considered less human, although it was position rather than skin color. We don't have that history or context either, so our cartoon continuously do what the descendants of certain Japanese groups consider to be a horrendous slur.

It's good to show sensitivity in these things, but it can be hard for people removed from that culture to even understand the issue.

All that being said, I do hope the character doesn't end up being cringe worthy to Western audiences.
