I think they could actually be the Mighty Morphin' team just with different powers. From what I have seen of Shattered Grid so far I could see the MMPR sacrificing their powers completely thus robbing Drakkon and his armies of access to them. Then this arc is like a re-imagined Ninja Quest, possibly leading to new suit designs. And these suits are just borrowed powers while on this quest.

So basically the original season 1 MMPR rangers getting whatever morpher they can salvage amidst the chaos as a last minute solution? That sounds cool actually.
