I think they went with snake to keep the animal motif overall. So it might play more into the story on why.

Skulls aren't typically something Nickelodeon worries about. So I don't think that change had to do with concerns of kid reactions.

The skull of Messiah was also another nod to P.R. that Go-Busters did, echoing not only Venjix from RPM, but Zordon!!! It's possible, though I will not say definite, that in order to distinguish EVOX from Zordon visually they made a change! Plus, the idea of a slithering snake sneaking into places where it doesn't belong fits with the premise of a virus infecting the Morphing Grid! While the change from Messiah is obvious at this stage, I won't nitpick too heavily!

P.S.: Was there some brief new footage of enemy Megazords in that trailer? I saw at least one scene where an enemy robot lands in water that I honestly don't remember from Go-Busters!!!
