Sometimes people can be hypocrites when it comes to stuff like that. When I was in High School, members of the Anime Club told me that they don't like DBZ anymore because it was for little kids. They are like "We move on to more mature anime like One Piece, Naruto and Bleach".

Not saying it's taken as dark just that by and large, kids in Japan don't seem think it's as kiddy as tokusatsu. This is based on actual comments from elementary kids in Japan. Kids think it's silly after a certain age and think other kiddy anime are more "mature". (and we all know people who think things like One Piece or Bleach and Naruto are for adults)
