I think you mean King Kong Appears in Edo and yes, it was a real movie. It was done by Zensho Cinema, not Toho. Fuminori Ohashi even considers it to be the first Toku ever. Godzilla 1954 was not the first Toku, but it was the first major one that helps create Toku that we know today.

I just learned of this one recently from some friends.

Don't know how that conversation started, but this tidbit was dropped and it breaks the mold on convention.

A shame that no print survived the War! Would be nice if an older print was found somewhere in the near future, but highly unlikely...
