What I wanted most was to be able to pose the robe hanging straight down, as it does when Wizard isn't in motion. I wanted to eliminate the pooching-outward effect. Weirdly, the Wizard retail line did this part perfectly, but it didn't move well.

I wrestled with this a bit on the Shinkocchou Seihou Wizard before I figured it out. The trick is to create deep bends in the hem, which give the extra material somewhere to go.

I don't recall having to use much pressure on the robe for posing it. I'm guessing you shared my concerns that a stiff wire would make it easy to accidentally get the robe into a permanent, unappealing pose. So far, it seems they used a material that can hold a pose without presenting us with the classic wire-cape problem.
