Hasbro proved with the Transformers: Animated line that they can produce figures accurate to a highly stylized design so that shouldn't be an excuse.
First: Blind bags and minifigures. Pretty screen accurate (Though the Cutie Mark is only on one side).
Secondly, the larger toys are still just dolls. The hair brushing thing may be considered them continuing the norm, but that's just how things go.
Also, you must remember a few things. First is that Hasbro treats Transformers as one of it's top brands, and they're willing to sink a lot more money into it. MLP:FiM was a surprise hit, with the brand not lying dormant per se, but was never given precedence and only given a few direct to video movies making up the G3.5 era (If I recall correctly). With FiM, I really don't think Hasbro wanted to pour money into making screen accurate and detailed toys.
