I've kind of been assuming he only became the Swordsman of Darkness when he betrayed everybody? We've yet to see a flashback of him before the big incident, so I don't think it's yet out of the realm of possibility he used to have a less ominous gimmick at some point. I think it's because his Driver looks so distinctly crude and simple that got me thinking that way? It doesn't seem to me like it would've been created in whatever fashion everyone else's gear was.

But who knows, I'm probably overthinking it. Maybe he's like Dark Ghost and the universe was just kinda expecting him to turn evil eventually.
