Haha, I first saw it on a bootleg disc too! I think I'd seen a bit of the old cartoons, but not as a child, so I was pretty much going in blind like you, and, well, yeah, you could see the money that went into it, and it was nice because I was a big fan of Aso Kumiko, and I loved Utada Hikaru's theme song, but it really was a bit of a jumbled mess.

I remember years later when Higuchi Shinji had a temper-tantrum about people not really liking the Attack on Titan movies, and I always felt that it wasn't so much the audiences at fault, but that the weight of expectation and the bloated budgets for these big CGI filled movies that never looked that great anyway just crowded out the room for any real story.
