Also, in the west, thanks to streaming sites and subsidized programming, the perceived value of video content is very very low and that reflects on DVD/BD pricing. Just think about how we have something as amazing as The Mandalorian which you can currently watch ALL OF IT for just $7 if you finish in a month. Each episode costs about $15 million to make. The only way that math works out is an economy of scale that does not exist in Japan. So DVD and merch sales have to make up for it.
