Oh, it's not a serious show at all, but I do think it's worth watching. It's from Studio Trigger, so the same people responsible for Kill la Kill, SSSS Gridman, Gurren Lagann, etc. if that helps.
On the topic of Yu-Gi-Oh, it seems like people have been pretty thorough but I'd like to give my input.
It started off as a manga series about a gamer, and they would play a variety of games. One of the games was Duel Monsters, which ended up becoming super popular, and the manga focused more and more on it as it went along. The first anime, which is just called Yu-Gi-Oh but referred to as Season 0 by fans, is an adaptation of the beginning of the manga, and focuses on a variety of games. It's not an exact adaptation of the manga, though. Then, they made a second series, also called Yu-Gi-Oh, which picks up in the story at the same point where Season 0 left off, but they're separate continuities and the second series solely focuses on the card game. This was the first season to come to the US.
Since the card game was invented as an in-universe game, they didn't have a strict ruleset to follow, so the matches were determined based on what would be interesting to watch. When the card game came out irl, they had to come up with actual rules for it to follow, which the anime and manga gradually incorporated.
I've only season Season 0 and the first two main storylines in the second series (Duelist Kingdom and Battle City). Season 0 is great, I highly recommend it. Season 1 is fun and has held up better than you would expect, but it's still an early 2000s anime about kids playing card games where the rules were made up as they went along.
