No, but it is understandable because the otakus of Japan during Anno's generation love Thunderbirds. There was even a sketch comedy show in Japan during the 80s that spoofed it and had skits of it. Even Sgt. Frog shows love to Thunderbirds with one of their planes being a nod to Thunderbird 2.
