Agreed.

The games vary so much in gameplay and style, it makes sense that we would have different perspectives based on our first experiences. For me, I've only played five so far: XIII -> XIII-2 -> X -> XIII LR -> VIII. I've recently been tempted to see what XII is like though.

In fact, during the period between those two games, fans had been clamoring for a remake of some of the older games, especially 7. Square was dead-set against it, because they wanted to remain relevant and not get stuck in nostalgia. I think it's only been since the success of the 7 remake that they started looking backwards more.
I'm actually hoping that revisiting the older games gives a renewed sense of inspiration, resulting in a better end product. But I still have little faith in them these days.
Yeah, it wouldn't be fair of me to blame Square Enix for doing what's the most profitable based on fan demand, especially after they tried to hold their ground about continuing to make original content. There are worse sell-outs out there. I know that I usually have the minority opinion compared to the average FF fan and that's just the way it is in a secondary demographic, I can't expect to get what I want unless other people start wanting it as well. Honestly, I'm just glad to finally have something upcoming that I don't feel total apathy for.
If all this work on spin-offs and remakes does eventually spur some kind of inspiration for new original content like you suggest, maybe it'll be worth it.
