I would go by chronological order. You can appreciate where it all started; see what has changed and how the series evolved. I think it would be boring going backwards since the gameplay only got better with each entry, so you would start to miss things you had before.

1-3 especially feel like one package to me because they use the same sprites, 4 started to look different.

Nah, you would miss out on some cool things, especially the music. "Invisible Wing" is my favorite piece from the entire series.
