I think what they're trying to get at with Azuma is that his lack of a family/support system made him lose his way, while Ikki's moral center is shaped and protected by his family. Azuma's speech at the end is a lot about his loneliness, and how a separation from humanity leads to him viewing it as a failure.

The biggest disappointment to me in the movie was Tamaki being like Hey Wouldn't It Be Fun To Reform The Toxic Cult That At Least One Of Us Had An Entire Arc About Escaping? I was furious at him opening that suitcase and proudly showing off the remnants of psychosis and alienation that he saved. Huge thumbs down to making Tamaki and Hana dress up like the Giffamilia again!!!
