The fantasy world is exciting and impressive, but you can't stay there forever. Epic battles and court intrigue will wear you out. The crown crushes your head, and your body goes numb from sitting on the royal throne all the time. So one day, tired of it all, you leave your palace, get into a cool sports car and set off on a journey to the roar of the engine.
This is not the first such journey. The first one was a long time ago, back at school, right after I got my driving licence. Back then, cars were not so important, everything around you seemed magical and you had good friends, talented and honest. That journey was the first time you realised the difference between good, evil and everything in between, and the value of redemption and second chances.
The second journey was in the middle of my tumultuous adolescence. It was crazy, hectic and incredibly fun. Your friends back then were the biggest troublemakers you could meet outside of Akihabara, but you had a great time together. And on this trip you also learned to drive better and discovered the true power of emotion.
There was another trip, much quieter this time. On this trip you got to know cars even better. What's more, you've started to see them as living things. Now they are not just a means of transport for you, but friends, the same protagonists as the people around you. And you will keep this memory in your heart forever.
But it's time to leave the abyss of memories and return to reality. This journey includes everything you have learned on the previous ones, but it is radically different. You are now an adult and busy with business, namely delivery. Your friends are now mainly colleagues who have their own lives, which do not always revolve around cars, deliveries and your dreams and interests. Sometimes it's hard to be around them, and sometimes they ruin everything. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun together. Especially when the cars are cool, the adventures are exciting and fun, and you might run into old friends along the way, both expected and unexpected. So let the engine roar and the sports car speed through space!
And now, metaphors aside, I would like to ask you to remember your first feelings when we returned from the CGI fantasy to modern Tokyo last year. It was as if the cardboard backdrop of the labyrinth had fallen away and you appreciated the vastness of familiar places for the first time. It's probably forgotten now, but I'd ask you to remember that pleasant feeling.
But what struck me most about the Boonboomgers was the sound. It's rich, vibrant and piercing through the screen. The drone of morphers and engines, the roar of gunfire. It's a sound you don't hear even in expensive blockbusters. Maybe I'm overpraising, but these are my impressions.
I liked the characters. I understand the reasons why each of the main characters can be annoying, but for me personally, none of them crossed the line between cute eccentric and annoying idiot. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed some drama with our purple Sixth Senshi, but I liked the cleaners.
The villains were good too. Nothing spectacular, but they do a good job. Spinder deserves a place at the top of the final Sentai bosses. You can criticize the series for showing the most interesting villains the least, but I would argue that more screen time would only hurt them. And of course, the Three Goons are the real highlight and main stars of this series.
If I had to speculate a bit, I'd say that the main characters are a reference to the previous shows. We have the spy Chashiro and the policeman Joe; Taiya, who is in charge of both cars and rescuers; Genba, an alien, who is also in charge of other means of transport; and Mira, who can easily be written off like all the other Sentai because of her many part-time jobs. And cleaner Sakito is a plot for the future, when the Sentai start to run out of ideas. Okay, this paragraph shouldn't be taken seriously. As I said, it is speculation.
Besides, Boonboomgers has a lot in common with KR Drive. These include the theme, the aesthetic solutions, the toy cars and a trio of cute villains who are not perceived as evil at all by the show's finale. But most importantly, both shows were based on very atypical and very successful franchises. At the same time, they themselves tried to shoot in an 'old-fashioned' way, but were forced to introduce new elements in the second half. And although I think Sentai handled it better than Rider (because the traitors in Boonboomgers were suspicious from the beginning, while in Drive some of the twists were too sudden), judging by the indifference of most site users to the series, it hit harder. It's a shame.
In conclusion, it's a good show. It has nice, interesting characters, fancy, spectacular fights and the right morals. And even if the middle was a bit long and secondary (two sports episodes are proof of that), the beginning was interesting and the ending was incredibly dramatic and thoughtful. And nobody felt superfluous or unnecessary. But every journey must come to an end. Even when we travel in one round, we can stop at different places. This time we got out of the sports car at the edge of a magical forest inhabited by real and fantastic animals, both living and long extinct. What will our encounter with them be like?
P.S. Saiba is a real seventh boonboomger. I hope she gets a costume, at least for the stage show.
P.P.S. Itasha's song is fantastic!
