Jokes aside, this is heartbreaking. I got into Super Sentai about a decade ago when I started watching unofficial dubs of Jetman, Liveman, and Sun Vulcan on Facebook. Power Rangers is a cornerstone of my childhood and by extension Zyuranger. Super Sentai and Power Rangers have been attached at the hip since the debut of MMPR in late 1993. My suspicions that Sentai would wane when Power Rangers started to become inconsistent and deviate from their source material in the 2010s. The nail in the coffin being Hasbro announcing its divorce from Super Sentai licensing and ultimately putting Power Rangers on ice. Though Sentai has been having its own issues with ratings and I myself haven't been happy with the direction Sentai has been going over the past 5 years or so.
A rebranding might help, possibly a soft reboot. But there are nearly 50 individual Sentai teams Toei can exploit. While I do not want to see Japan become like the U.S. in terms of defaulting to the most popular/recognizable team (a la MMPR), I think Toei could benefit from reviving some older Sentai IPs as spin off sequel series. Perhaps adapting the Jetman sequel manga or revisiting Liveman or Gingaman. I do hope that the future is bright for Super Sentai despite this disappointing news.
is rebooting sentai ?
