Nexus is a very interesting show and I really liked how it demonstrated that the core themes of Ultraman could work even in an overwhelmingly bleak setting. It stands out even from other similarly dark and experimental 2000s tokusatsu by merit of the fact its doesn't even really have that like... edgy pre-teen appeal? Its narrative conflicts are so uncathartic and steeped in unglamorous parts of adulthood like that sometimes your boss hates you or you can't forgive yourself for unintentionally hurting someone. Like you said though, the show was fundamentally financially doomed from the start because it is like this. The Ren arc of the show softens up a lot compared to the Jun arc but that retooling clearly wasn't enough and the show ended up condensing stuff like the intended arc where Nagi was Nexus into one episode! A singular entry in the Ultra series to be sure, but the rough points undermined the show enough for me that I'd probably only watch up to episode 25 when I inevitably revisit it because I found that to be a much more satisfying stopping point than watching the show limp to its actual ending.
