When I watched Ultraman 80, Ultraseven completely captivated me with his brutal finisher. So I decided to watch it. I've only seen two episodes so far, so I could be making some mistakes.
The show is definitely rooted in science fiction, not just kids' entertainment. It's not exactly realistic, but compelling. Fortunately, it's not overly serious, and it makes you smile. Overall, I noticed a strong resemblance to Toho sci-fi films like H-Man. The technical execution is simply superb. I also liked that in the first episode, Dan assigned the fight against the flying saucers to a robot instead of jumping into the fray himself.
This immediately establishes the protagonist as a professional. Although the fact that the Ultra Garrison didn't suspect him of being an alien upon their first meeting is the most fantastic thing about this fantastic show.
I have mixed feelings about the design. I can't call Ultraseven's costume beautiful or even attractive. I like the purely aesthetically original Ultraman much more. But at the same time, Ultraseven's appearance has a sense of character and charisma that makes him endearing. He's inspired by a Greek warrior and, from the very beginning, is perceived as a hero who has been through dozens of battles.
Besides, if I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons for the new show was the wear and tear of Ultraman's costume, so choosing a darker, rougher material for the new hero is entirely logical. Also, the transformation through the eyes looks very cool.
Anyway, I'm still watching the show.
