I recently learned about Gamera vs. Garasharp. It's an aborted film, originally planned for 1972, but the bankruptcy of Daiei Studios in 1971 prevented it from being made. It's a shame, because it could have been excellent and, if not reinvigorated the franchise, at least ended the Showa era on a strong note.
First, Garasharp is a great antagonist. The snake and turtle are like the Ying-Yang of the reptile world. Garasharp is also very impressive in appearance and seems an invincible opponent. And there aren't many snake kaiju due to their mobility issues. Yes, Manda appears frequently in the Godzilli universe, but with the exception of "Atragon," he's always seemed like a feeble background monster to me. Plus, his name sounds really vulgar in my native language.
Secondly, Gamera rescuing Garasharp's young and transporting them to a desert island where neither they nor anyone can harm them is a wonderful idea. It's reminiscent of Superman's solution in Superman vs. the Mole Men. But while there it permanently stops interaction between species incapable of peaceful coexistence, in Gamera's case it opens up the possibility for a multitude of new plots. Someone lands on the island, kidnaps the young, experiments on them, and Gamera saves them. Ultimately, Gamera's lore could have easily featured another positive kaiju besides the main character.
But, unfortunately, none of this happened. It's a shame.Of all the unmade kaiju films from that period that I'd like to see, Gamera vs. Garasharp takes a close second place to Bride of Godzillа. Just reading the script left me speechless for a couple of minutes.
