Welcome. I decided, after being told to (
), to consolidate all my Sentai Reviews! Into one thread. So this will be where they all are from now on.
Tonight we start with.. Under The Red Hood!
First, let's start with the comic. In the Comic Universe
during the storyline "A Death in the Family" Jason Todd, the second teen to wear the mantle of Robin, died at the hands of Joker. Who beat him soundly with a crowbar, and then left him to die beside his Mother inside a locked warehouse in the Middle East. Now.. the ressurection gets a little muddled so follow me here. The Jason Todd that first appears is really Clayface. Who kidnaps Tim Drake, the next Robin, just to get inside Bat's head. The next Jason Todd is the real Jason, who was ressurected (And here comes the weird) when Superboy-Prime punches the walls of Paradise (IE: Heaven) and sends ripples through time. One of those ripples undoing Todd's death and bringing him back to life. I know.. Wtf Loeb. Wtf.
Now, how the movie handles the ressurection makes much more sense. Ra's Al Ghul (Which is pronounced Raish, not Ra's. Batman Begins still pisses me off with that...) feels he owes a debt to Batman. You see, in this universe, he sent the Joker after Batman as a distraction from his Mid East operations. But Joker, being Joker, took it to far and brutally murdered Jason. So Ra's kidnapped his body from customs, replacing with a latex fake.
And here's my first problem. He's fucking Batman. The world's greatest detective and analytical mind. Not to mention paranoid out his backside. You expect me to believe he couldn't tell the difference between Latex and a dead body? Or that he never checked it to start with?!
But it happened. So Ra's takes Jason to the Lazarus Pit, deciding the only way to pay his debt is to ressurect his ward. But Jason comes back wrong. The Pit screws with his mind and he runs screaming, and very naked, into the desert. At night. And somehow survives.
Somehow Superboy punching time is making more sense.
Now in current time Batman is dealing with a new vigilante (And can I say: Jenson Ackles as Red Hood? Best decision DC ever made. Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing was number two). One who's slaughtering Black Mask's underbosses, and slowly taking over his network. Not to become a crime boss. But because he feels the only to stop crime, is to tightly control it. Thinking there will always be crime and you can never stop it completely.
Now here's my second problem.
Black Mask is a horrible person. He once kidnapped Catwoman's sister and her husband. Torturing and killing him in front of her, and then making her eat his body.
So what do they do in the movie? Cartoon him up until he's just another cliche'd over the top character. I am not amused.
But Mask, not wanting to lose his hold on the crime in Gotham (Which he controls nearly all of), makes Ghul's mistake. He busts Joker out of Arkham to take down this new Red Hood. And guess what? Did you guess Joker betrayed him and threw him with gasoline into a subway car? Congradulations! Now this is after throwing everything the Gotham underworld has at Red Hood and failing.
Now during all of this, Batman is coming to terms with the fact Jason is alive. Even visiting Ra's in his stronghold to learn what happened. And of course, he and Jason confront Joker. And this isn't Mark Hammil Joker. It's an older looking Joker. Which I don't like. Every Joker should be Mark Hammil Joker, because Mark does the best Joker since Romero in the original.
Ignoring the fact they changed the origin story, and the fact they turned Black Mask into Wile E Coyote, I liked this movie. The story had issues in spots, and Joker was far to serious for my taste, but it was fun.
5/5
