Oh dear, I go away for a weekend and discussion on this thread opens back up.

Rory was an excellent character. While Amy regressed throughout her tenure, Rory was the one that actually grew as a character. He wasn't a selfish bitch like Amy, and actually fit the bill as a normal person thrown into weird situations rather than the Mary Sue characters Moffat writes female companions as.

Not giving him a proper sendoff was a MASSIVE disservice.

What do you mean by this exactly? There were plenty of Doctors before Eccleston that weren't "enigmatic old-man types".
