It's always been very novel to me that SSSS was the first of that era of adaptions/localizations to have a plot even remotely close to that of the original series. In fact I'd call it pretty darn similar in the broad strokes. We wouldn't get that with Power Rangers until Lightspeed Rescue at the earliest.

Always wondered if that was Dic or Tsuburaya or a combination of the two which lead to that?

Personally I think the show holds up really well. The action scenes are very strong (of course, being a Tsuburaya show), and the production design is top notch. The inserts are corny as heck, but if I was 10 (instead of 14) when it aired, I'd have eaten it up, I am sure.

As it stands I usually muted the inserts.
