A lot of people don't seem to know the difference between hyphens and dashes either. - is to denote a compound word, — is used for a break or interjection.

Hyphen: Singapore is a city-state.
Dash: Watch where you poke tha— Stop it!

I think the main problem is that people don't know how to type a dash. A hyphen is easy since it has not one, but two keys on the keyboard. A dash requires a bit more work. However, a "--" is also acceptable as a dash.
