The Doctor goes to rescue Rose from the Daleks, but faces an impossible choice...
Plot
Continuing on from last episode, the Doctro and Jack fly the TARDIS (through SPACE!) to save Rose. This act of selflessness earns them missiles, which they dodge with a shiel form the extrapolator from two episodes ago. (Hooray for MacGuffins!). They arrive on the Dalek ship, materialising over Rose and a Dalek. It dies. They step out, protected by the shield, and meet the Emperor Dalek. It turns out he created all the Daleks from transmatted humans, with only 1 cell in a billion fit to be cultured into a Dalek. (That means approx 50-100 cells per person). They are insane-more than usual-and have discovered religion, worshipping the Emperor as their God.
Nine, Rose and Jack return to the Game Station as the Daleks begin their attack. Lynda is stationed as lookout to track the Daleks progress through the Game Station, while Jack forcefields the top 6 floors-the Daleks have to enter at floor 494 and go up. They quickly eliminate most of the Earth's surface and enter the Game Station. Meanwhile, Nine has com up with a plan - a Delta Wave, which vaporises peoples brains. However, he can't finish it fully in time, so it won't be able to tell human from Dalek. To make sure Rose stays safe, he sends her back to Earth in the TARDIS, using Emergency Program 1, which lock down the TARDIS and traps her on Earth. On Earth she moans about how the Doctor is dying/going to die in 198,095 years. They try using Mickey's car to open the Deus Ex Machina of the TARDIS, but it fails. Jackie comes along to discourage her, but Rose reminds her of what happened back in 'Father's Day'-how some random blonde held her fathers hand. And that was Rose. Jackie, in response, brings a pick up truck. Using this, they rip open the console, and Rose looks into the Time Vortex/Heart of the TARDIS.
Speaking of them, they kill all the winners on Floor 0, Lynda with a 'Y', and then all the defenders. Even Jack! The Doctor finishes the Delta wave just as the Dalek's reach him. The Emperor taunts him, telling him he can either be a killer or a coward. He chooses "coward any day". The Daleks prepare to EXTERMINATE him, when we hear a familiar noise-the TARDIS materialising. The door opens and Rose is standing there, her eyes glowing. She pretty much instantly kills all the Daleks, spreads the words Bad Wolf through time, and then revives Jack. The Doctor goes up to her, and absorbs the time vortex radiation from her. They both stumble back into the TARDIS, leaving the newly reborn Jack behind. Wonder why?
Then this happens:
Yeah, the regeneration. I think it's handled really well. I like Nine. Overall, this episode is a really good season finale. It ups the ante and, although the Daleks were handled better in 'Dalek', it still shows them as a credible threat. This and Bad Wolf are worth a watch any day. 9/10
Characters
This episode gives the Ninth Doctor a final bit of character development, showing that, while he may have finished the Time War, he won't harm an innocent species on purpose. Rose whines a lot, and Jackie stops being such a **** about the Doctor. 6/10
Scare Factor
The Daleks have some scary moments, like exterminating everyone on Floor 0 and killing the defenders. 6/10
Bad Wolf Watch: Rose spreads the words through time
Overall
This episode is a fitting end to the Ninth Doctors tenure, and ends my review of series 1! (Cricket Sound) I really like this episode for its enjoyment factor and use of the Daleks. This ties into the Time War plot line and the Daleks don't seem overused yet. Anyway, tune in next time for a review of something almost 50 years old...
