I guess it's because so much of modern Who is so artificial. I don't wanna be 'that guy' but even at its most rubbery, practical effects were physically made and took heart and ingenuity, it's really there on screen and being interacted with. None of this is the case if it's done by CGI, especially when it's CGI done on a BBC budget.
It also doesn't help that Moffat is basically a massive Who fanboy and seems to pick stories that basically jack off Classic Who's ego rather than trying to do anything new or well...interesting.
