Mortal Kombat was a fun fighter, while it wasn't my personal fighter of choice (I was a Street Fighter player), I can see the influence (Seeing as how there were an overabundance of MK ripoffs using digitized graphics, including a crappy American SF that ripped off MK. Talk about crazy
)
But it was also a series muddied by attempts at innovation. It never could get the 3D systems down, so from 4, to Deadly Alliance, to Deception, to Armageddon, it just disappointed more and more, and my interest waned, only briefly reinvigorated by Shaolin Monks (And action/adventure beat-em up, not a fighter) before dropping again.
The flare of Fatalities were nice, but come MK 3, it reeked far too much of "Trying too hard," most especially to recapture the same shock value of the first MK.
The movie was great, and it's nice to see a Video game movie that isn't sheer crap.
But it would leave a bad taste in my mouth to call MK "One of the best" in terms of games, after staling gameplay come MK3 and poor mechanics in all their 3D games. While MK9 breathed a breath of fresh air into the franchise, time will tell if they can keep the train rolling or if they'll derail once more.
